The invention activities of the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry – wood materials, biorefinery – a technological approach to produce different products and materials, “green chemistry”

Wood and plant biomass are vast renewable resources, which can be used both as a material and a raw material to produce a variety of products. The invention activities of the Institute are aimed at obtaining new materials and products from these resources. The recent inventions of the Institute are as follows:

• method and apparatus for the chemical processing of outer birch-bark to betulin and lupeol;
• method for obtaining a lignocellulose filler for wood-polymer composite materials;
• method for the production of fuel granules from plant raw material;
• method for producing levoglucosan;
• producing of polyurethane foam materials from renewable raw materials, their utilization as heat insulators;
• method for the production of xylose;
• method for enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat straw lignocellulose.

Such producing of different products with the aim to more completely utilize wood and biomass resources corresponds to the modern biorefinery approach and the principles of green chemistry. Intellectual property rights to them are enshrined in Latvian and European patents and patent applications.
