Planned results of the Programme’s implementation::

In the course of implementing the NatRes programme, new technologies and products will be developed, which will enable the domestic enterprises to apply those knowledge-based competitive technologies and produce innovative products from local resources, promoting export and the development of Latvia’s national economy. The researchers involved in the four projects, joined in the programme, will conduct the study of Latvia’s underground resources, forestry resources, raw materials of local flora and fauna, and transport resources, will assess their quality improving potentialities and suitability for producing various products, and will develop new technologies and products. Each project will make its contribution to reaching the common goal - sustainable utilisation of the local resources, and will make a considerable contribution to the development of the fields related to the utilisation of underground resources, forestry, food, agriculture and transport fields. The social significance of the programme’s results is that students and young researchers of different level and different fields will be involved in NatRes implementation, which will improve their qualification, enabling to adapt oneself to the working market more successfully. According to the programme’s inner structure, each of the envisaged tasks of research will give an individual result with a significant social and national economy effect, which will be enhanced by the synergy of those results. The programme’s main results are the formation of the basis of industrial production restructuring, favouring the obtaining of high added value new products, which are not only exportable, but will also ensure new jobs in different regions of the state.

In the project of Mineral Resources geological studies of clay deposits, composition and properties of clay minerals will provide opportunities for evaluation of selective clay mining in Latvia to reach in already known deposits qualities satisfactory for manufacturing of innovative products. Developed data sets and data bases will be public available for researchers and entrepreneurs supporting involvement of producers in new Technologies, in specific taking on account regional specific in Latvia regarding commercial activities and initiatives. The new research methods and Technologies will be in place at the end of the Project as well the quality controlling systems or substantial parts of it. The natural qualities of mineral resources will be necessary to evaluate and develop. Therefore, the Project foreseen to develop new Technologies in particular to get exact fractions (size or mono-mineral composition) from clay deposits in Latvia. This leads to new products and high quality commodities with wide range applications, including cosmetics, food production, supporting industrial activities in Latvia and export markets. Secondary in will provide new needs for studies and scientific research. More results are expected form new commodities applied in technologies and products of expanded clay ceramic production. This is substantial input to limit import of these products and possibilities to attract new export markets. Modified and adapted to different environmental conditions expanded clay ceramic innovative products are recognised by scientists in microbiology. The honeycomb ceramic products are considered as a promising carrier for biotechnological processes. Ceramic modifications make this carrier more appropriate for various environmental conditions. Thus, innovations in the field of honeycomb ceramic development provide a wide spectrum of new biotechnological products with a high export potential. Interdisciplinary studies of peat, sapropel and biomass properties and application potential could deliver now knowledge supporting applications. It is planned to develop peat based oil sorbents, for removal of oil spills on soils and in aquatic environment. Also peat and biomass based sorbents for metal and other trace element removal could find their application for treatment of wastewaters, enabling (after tests at least at pilot scale level) their large scale applications.

In the Forestry field, implementing the project, innovative sustainable forest management technologies will be developed, so that to ensure the productivity of the forestry productions, adapted to climate changes. The developed theoretical and technical models for planning non-degrading utilisation of forestry resources, and proposals for increasing the volume of the local wood industry resources will promote the development and exportability of production. The increase in the efficiency of forestry technologies, developed on the basis of the newly gained knowledge, will promote the economic development and competitiveness of all forestry fields, will ensure greater tax income and the growth of employment in the country. In forest science, new notions will be gained, the existing elaborations will be strengthened and extended, personnel will be retained and expanded, and the common competitiveness indicators of Latvia’s forest science will be improved.

The studies on the mobilisation potentialities of the local wood resources to ensure the demand for the production of new products with a higher added value and for bioenergy production are practically oriented and will present prerequisites for the application of the results in practice – the development of a common system of wood resources accounting for modelling the development of the state national economy in connection with the management of natural resources and the development of rural regions. A methodological base will be elaborated for use in forestry field enterprises, as well as a data processing programme prototype to solve the tasks of wood resources transportation. In the framework of the Project, analysis of the economic factors is performed; the development, transfer and application of the efficient technologies will enhance the labour productivity in forestry, and will decrease the prime cost of the forestry field products, thereby not only increasing their competitiveness, but also making them distinct and recognisable on the saturated market. As a result of the studies, wide utilisation of wood resources for obtaining varied competitive products will be ensured. Ecologically and economically grounded technological solutions will be worked out - methods and agents for obtaining wood materials with upgraded durability and mechanical strength properties. Developing technologies with a lowered material and power consumption, innovative densified wood and board materials from low density wood will be created. As a result of the studies, the circle of the products derived from wood will be supplemented with new, competitive marketable products, which will be offered to the wood products’ manufacturers. Also technologies for obtaining varied products with a high added value in deep processing technologies, including those from the by-products of production processes and non-wood resources, will be offered to enterprises. The integration of biorefinery technologies in the utilisation of wasteless wood components for producing high added value products of small tonnage will be optimised. In the course of the project’s implementation, new more extensive notions will be gained on the wood properties upgrading potentialities, the processes that occur in the processed wood, their purposeful control and forecasting potentialities, and engagement of optimal technologies for obtaining varied products of the high added value niche. The results of the project’s implementation will be suitable to forest owners, timber exporters, entrepreneurs of the woodworking and wood processing, who are interested in the achievements in forest and wood sciences, and further development of the field. The project’s implementation will promote to a great extent the economic development of the Latvian state, favouring the development of industry, including the SME field.

 see Project No.2. ...

The realization of the Project will give diverse input in Latvian Agriculture and Food industry: by agroeconomic evaluation of advantages and drawbacks of technologies used in growing of important agricultural crops, and suggest new technological solutions; by evaluating the influence of new technologies on biologically active compounds in raw materials and processed foods, as well as by offering options for preserving of the valuable compounds during processing and product storage; by recommending possible solutions for use of by-products obtained in production of rape seed oil, bioethanol and apple juice. Benefit for national economy will be new jobs, development of agricultural and food production, by introducing innovative technologies and new products. Implementing of developed technologies as a result of the research will support competiveness of Latvian enterprises in Europe and world-wide. Several innovative products and new technological solutions will be developed as a result of the project. Potential users of the project results are agricultural farms or farmer co-operatives, who produce field crops, apples (“Pūres Dārzi” Ltd., the farm “ZS Ābelītes”, apple producing co-operatives “Zelta ābele”, “Kurzemes dārzi”) or deer (the farm „Saulstari 1”, „Māras brieži” Ltd.), as well as food processing enterprises („Viesuļi” Ltd., Stock companies „Dobeles Dzirnavas”, „Rīgas Dzirnavnieks”, „Rīgas piena kombināts”, LATFOOD, “Daro” Ltd., etc.).
